Gastric Bypass Surgery (for weight loss and obesity)

What is Gastric Bypass?

Gastric Bypass Roux en-Y is considered premiere in current obesity surgery compared to others in proven effectiveness. It is an exceptional way of maintaining long-term weight control and reducing excess body weight that can lead to associated serious health conditions.

Who Should Consider It?

The determination as to whether one is morbidly obese and not just overweight is the most important question that should be addressed prior to considering this or any similar procedure. The "BMI" or "Body Mass Index" is specifically designed for this purpose. It calculates whether an individual's weight is healthy based on height. For example, a woman of 5 foot 4 inches tall with a BMI of 20 is 20 lbs over a healthy weight for her height. The BMI classifies individuals into five categories:

  • Healthy
  • Slightly Overweight
  • Obese
  • Severely Obese
  • Morbidly Obese

A person is considered overweight when their BMI is over 29.9. A gastric bypass surgery definitely must be considered when one is morbidly obese or more than 100lbs over an ideal body weight. At its peak, serious conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes are much more likely to arise as a result and cannot be disregarded. The reduction of weight in this case is the solution and gastric bypass surgery is an exceptional way to achieve it.

Procedures

As previously stated, a gastric bypass surgery is an exceptional way of achieving long-term control of weight. It even is able to eliminate the craving caused by dieting or reducing food to smaller portions, but exactly how is it done? The surgery itself is relatively simple with no major worries, if completed by a skilled doctor. It can be broken down into three major steps.

  • A tiny pouch is created that is separate from the stomach.
  • The small intestine is cut and rearranged to provide a funnel from the stomach, while maintaining digestive juices simultaneously.
  • The lower part of the stomach is skipped and the food enters the bowel at the start of the meal.

It barely conflicts with the usual intake of food, but reduces it therefore easing the sensation of hunger. It produces an early sense of fullness even if the serving size is smaller than usual. All in all, there is no craving and no hunger with much smaller food portions.

Risks

As with any procedure, there are risks to be considered. A major concern for gastric bypass patients is that once the surgery is completed, it is nonreversible. Also, postmenopausal women should be aware of potential heightened bone calcium loss, and the bypassed portion of the stomach is not easily seen via x-ray if a malignancy should occur. For further information, please refer to a consulting physician.

Benefits

The advantages far outweigh disadvantages. Most patients can lose up to 80-100% of excess weight and are able to maintain their weight for up to five years. Such patients even when given the opportunity to return to their normal diets were still satisfied remaining on diet sized portions. Most importantly, 100% of patients' health problems associated with the surgery were resolved following the procedure.

Conclusion

The question as to if one is morbidly obese is extremely important because if the answer is "yes", a solution must be found now before an associated serious illness appears. Gastric Bypass Surgery is the premiere solution.
